48th Street Improvements Project (OPW 52875)

About the Project

The City of Omaha is preparing for the reconstruction of 48th Street from Harrison to Q Street and Q Street from 48th Street to 44th Street. This project is to replace aging and deteriorating pavement,
address access management needs, enhance pedestrian facilities, and improve the transportation facility operations, safety and mobility of the traveling public on both the Q Street and 48th Street
corridors. The proposed project would reconstruct 48th Street to a hybrid 2-lane and 3-lane urban section. A 3-lane urban section is planned on Q Street. Proposed improvements also include curb and
gutter, storm sewer, retaining walls, sidewalks, and roundabouts.

EVENTS AND UPDATES
 
June 25, 2024
At this time, construction continues on the remaining work inside Phase 1 and 2 on Q Street between 48th
and 45th Street. Phase 3 work is anticipated to begin on or around Thursday, June 27, 2024, and will take
place along Q Street between 45th and 44th Street. Phase 3 construction is anticipated to take approximately two months to complete.
 
May 31, 2024
Due to unforeseen circumstances, construction on Madison Street between 48th and 46th Street was delayed and is now anticipated to begin June 5th, 2024. The street will be closed to traffic during construction. As a part of Phase 1 0A construction, direct access to 48th St from Madison St will be permanently removed. 
 
April 25, 2024
  • At this time, construction continues on the remaining work inside Phase 1 on Q Street between 48th and 46th Street.  
  • Phase 2 work is anticipated to begin on or around Wednesday, April 24, 2024, and will take place along Q Street between 46th and 45th Street.  Phase 2 construction is anticipated to take approximately three months to complete.
  • Phase 10A work is anticipated to begin on or around Monday, April 29, 2024, and will take place along Madison Street between 48th and 46th Street. The street will be closed to traffic during construction. As a part of Phase 10A construction, direct access to 48th St from Madison St will be permanently removed.  Phase 10A construction is anticipated to take approximately two months to complete.
The anticipated schedule is subject to change due to a number of factors including weather.

Phase 1 is set to begin on Monday, March 4th.
 
 
February 7, 2024
A public open house was held on Thursday, February 6, 2024, from 6:00 - 8:00 PM at the Bluestem Middle School Gym (5910 S. 42nd St, Omaha, NE 68107). This meeting was held to provide information regarding the 48th Street Improvement project. A brief presentation was followed by an open house format to talk to City staff about the upcoming improvements. Meeting materials can be found below.
